All about visual merchandising

The Visual Merchandiser supports an active sales culture by ensuring that visual moments are set up and maintained according to the direction of the Visual Merchandising Guide (VMG) and are an inspiration for the host to drive sales. They are experts in visual standards, which include specific merchandising techniques, fixture blocking, lighting and implementation of all elements of In Store Marketing (ISM) such as mannequins, navigation signs and all Coordinated Store Environment (CSE) signs that support events , seasons, holidays and in-store promotions.

As a Visual Merchandiser, no two days are ever the same, but a typical day will most likely include the following responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming experience by authentically greeting all guests
  • Observe to quickly understand if a guest needs assistance or wishes to interact. Follow body language and verbal cues to personalize your approach
  • Interact with guests in a genuine way, which includes asking questions to better understand their specific needs
  • Be informed on tools, products, and services available in the total store and specific to your area, to solve the guest’s problems and improve their experience
  • Thank the guest in a genuine way and let them know that we are happy who has chosen to shop at Target.
  • Inspire guests to discover solutions through compelling visual merchandising
  • Influence a team of leaders, style consultants and General Merchandise (GM ) of the store to be informed about visual merchandising and the visual standard
  • Understand sales objectives, plan and executethe daily/weekly workload to deliver visual merchandising, department and store sales goals, guest engagement; including: merchandising, transitions, events and promotions
  • Guiding the execution of the business strategy of Visual Merchandising, visual standards and implementation of In Store Marketing (ISM) not pogged in all relevant areas of the store
  • Collaborate with store leaders to plan, support and validate the execution of all sets of Visual Merchandising Guide (VMG) in the store
  • Support team onboarding, continuous learning and help close knowledge and skill gaps through training, influence and hands-on experiences
  • Inspire guests to discover solutions through compelling visual merchandising across all categories
  • Leverage daily interactions and meetings to teach visual priorities to style consultants and General Merchandise Experts about visual priorities and creating visual moments to support cart creation for each guest
  • Solve merchandising issues and adapting sets to create and maintain inspiring presentations
  • Teaching and influencing A&A authorization guiding principles
  • Evaluating store visual standards to help improve presentations visuals in A&A, Home, Company Space, LTO and brand launches
  • Support the execution of Visual Merchandising Guide (VMG) and Visual A djacencies (VA) floor set
  • Supports changes to the product assortment and keep the area inspiring for guests all year round by reselling new products and maintaining a brand space following the new sets
  • Partnersto maintain visual integrity by republishing the visual moments of the store
  • Organize and set up all non-planographic ISM elements throughout the store
  • Keep the ISM space behind the scenes organized and updated with current signature tools and signature devices
  • Provide a service and shopping experience that meets the needs of the guest
  • Work a program that aligns with the needs of the guest and the work (this includes early mornings, evenings, night shifts and weekends)
  • Always demonstrate a culture of ethical conduct, safety and compliance
  • All other business needs

But there are some skills you should have right from the start

The good news is that we have tremendous training that will help teach you everything you need to know to become a Visual Merchandiser.

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 or 2 years of experience in visual merchandising
  • Must be at least 18 years or older
  • Business acumen (e.g. margin, profitability, etc.) and creativity to inspire guests and drive sales
  • Strong understanding of trend and style that reflect our brand
  • Guide and influence store teams to follow processes that support visual merchandising
  • Learn and adapt to current technology needs
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Manage workload and prioritize activities independently
  • Welcoming and helpful attitude
  • Effective communication skills

  • Access all areas of the building to respond to guest or team member issues

  • Interpret instructions, reports and information
  • Carefully manage cash register operations
  • Go up and downfor stairs
  • Scanning, handling and moving goods efficiently and safely, including frequent lifting or moving of goods up to 15 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving goods up to 40 pounds
  • Flexible work schedule (eg nights, weekends and holidays) and regular attendance required
