About the work

As an Indirect Fire Infantry Soldier in the Army National Guard, you will be in charge of the infantry’s most powerful weapon – the mortar. As part of a mortar squad, section or platoon, you’ll undertake challenging activities that can include parachuting from a troop transport plane to access locations where you’ll build mortars and camouflage their positions. You will also locate and neutralize enemy mines.

As your skills increase, so do your responsibilities. Advanced team members supervise and train other soldiers, lead and control mortar squads, provide tactical and technical guidance to subordinates, and oversee the construction of mortar positions. Advanced indirect firefighters are responsible for receiving and implementing combat orders, guiding soldiers in offensive and defensive operations, and requesting, observing, and adjusting support indirect fire.

Duties of Work

  • Prepare, load and fire three types of mortars
  • Employ crew and weapons in offensive, defensive and retrograde ground combat
  • Operate , clean and store automatic weapons
  • Employ, fire and recover antipersonnel and antitank mines
  • Conduct reconnaissance missions to locate enemy troops and cannon locations

After 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you’ll learn fundamental Soldier skills, you’ll participate in 14 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), which will include a combination of hands-on simulated combat and classroom training, where you’ll keep your skills sharp during frequent squad maneuvers, target shooting and war games. ”
